What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is the internationally recognised standard for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the standard provides organisations with a structured framework for managing occupational health and safety risks, preventing work-related injury and ill health, and continually improving safety performance.

The standard follows the Annex SL framework, meaning it shares a common structure with other ISO standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. This allows organisations to easily integrate quality, environmental and health & safety management systems into a single streamlined Integrated Management System.

Unlike traditional health and safety systems that often focus solely on compliance, ISO 45001 adopts a risk-based approach. The standard encourages organisations to proactively identify hazards, assess risks, consult workers and implement controls before incidents occur.

Organisations typically pursue ISO 45001 certification for a variety of reasons including:

  • Improving workplace safety performance

  • Reducing accidents, incidents and near misses

  • Demonstrating commitment to employee wellbeing

  • Meeting customer and tender requirements

  • Strengthening legal compliance arrangements

  • Improving contractor and supplier management

  • Enhancing reputation and stakeholder confidence

  • Supporting continual improvement

ISO 45001 is applicable to almost any organisation regardless of size, sector or complexity. The standard is commonly implemented within manufacturing, engineering, construction, logistics, warehousing, facilities management, utilities, professional services and many other industries.

Why Businesses Choose ISO 45001 Certification

Increasingly, organisations are recognising that strong health and safety management is not simply a legal requirement but a business advantage.

Clients, contractors, insurers, employees and regulators all expect organisations to demonstrate effective management of health and safety risks. ISO 45001 provides an internationally recognised framework for achieving this.

Benefits often include:

Improved Risk Management

The standard encourages organisations to systematically identify hazards and implement controls before incidents occur.

Stronger Legal Compliance

ISO 45001 helps organisations identify and manage applicable health and safety legislation and compliance obligations.

Enhanced Tender Opportunities

Many public sector contracts, principal contractors and larger organisations either require or strongly favour ISO 45001 certification during procurement processes.

Reduced Accidents and Incidents

A structured management system helps reduce workplace injuries, property damage and operational disruptions.

Improved Employee Engagement

The standard places significant emphasis on worker consultation, participation and communication.

Increased Client Confidence

Certification demonstrates an independent commitment to managing health and safety risks effectively.

Better Business Performance

Organisations often find that improved planning, communication and risk management have wider operational benefits beyond health and safety alone.
